Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

A game by Atlus, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (or Shin Megami Tensei 3, or Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Maniax for the special version featuring Dante of Devil May Cry, or Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call in Europe) came out in 2003 in Japan, in 2004 in America and in 2005 in Europe.

The game is set mainly in a post-apocalypse "world in becoming", the Vortex World. There, alone, transformed into a demi-fiend and surrounded by demons in this pseudo-Hell, you go forth to build a new, better world, according to the philosophy of life you think is best. Not everyone will agree with your views, however...

The Hero

You, the hero, are just an ordinary teenage boy when a strange man and your teacher trigger the end of the world. Not only that, but a little blond boy, assisted by his old nanny infects you with a parasitic snake-like thing that changes your body into that of a demon. Then, on top of that, you wake up on a cold hospital gurney without your two friends and surrounded by demons hungry for tasty demi-fiend meat.

Some days, it's just not worth getting out of bed.

You do get the coolest tattoos ever out of this raw deal though.

The Demi-Fiend is also a near-undefeatable optional boss on a Second Cycle playthrough of Digital Devil Saga 1.
